My dear boyhood friends and outdoor buddies own this farm, Smith Farm, down below my studio. We had a lot of fun eating outdoors and enjoying the wildlife there. They had all sorts of birds, like quail and turkeys, as well as other animals, such as rabbits, chickens, goats and donkeys.

The Smith brothers, like me, are very interested in saving these old places, like this corn crib, and the memories of a “time when people lived farther apart – but closer together” as my friend Charles Kuralt used to say. We aim to keep alive the sentiment, the camaraderie, the tradition.

The snow, and the quail flying by, are two of my favorite scenes – my most precious memories – of this place.
